AVEVA Assembly Planning 12.0

The proven solution for optimum utilisation of shipbuilding facilities

Building a ship is a costly and complex process demanding skilled planning of facilities, materials and labour resources. Planning the assembly sequence for the hull and outfitting items, to perform assembly operations at the earliest possible stages, can bring substantial savings of cost and time. AVEVA Assembly Planning is a powerful tool for defining this build strategy and producing the necessary assembly documentation.

Business Benefits

  • Increased efficiency
Improved coordination between design and production leads to better change control and more efficient production.
  • Reduced costs
Increased pre-outfitting of assemblies and blocks reduces subsequent production costs and rework.
  • Reduced time and man-hours
Parallel design and assembly planning work reduces project timescales.
Efficient creation of accurate assembly documents reduces man-hours, costs and lead times.

Key Features

Editing an assembly's installation sequence

Conventionally, design and production drawings are created through a CAD system, while the assembly structure and the manufacturing Bill of Materials are made in PDM or ERP. In such an environment, it is difficult to coordinate different disciplines and design changes. AVEVA Assembly Planning is an integral part of the AVEVA Marine solution, so any design change that affects the manufacturing Bill of Materials is easily managed.
AVEVA Assembly Planning allows efficient definition of the vessel build strategy and the creation of assembly production information. The hierarchical assembly production breakdown structure is defined and maintained in parallel with the design and modelling work.

Build Strategy

AVEVA Assembly Planning is involved from the start when project decisions are taken about how the ship is to be split into main blocks. Tools are provided to quickly define alternative block boundaries and to determine whether their weights match the capacity of the yard's facilities. Early estimates of paint area and weld lengths can also be obtained.

From these activities a 'top down' build strategy is defined. It specifies how the ship is to be built using available capacity, and how the main equipment and systems will be installed. Later, when the detailed design is available, this is added into the assembly production breakdown structure in a 'bottom up' manner.

ERP Integration

AVEVA Assembly Planning can create a manufacturing Bill of Materials and all associated drawings required by typical ERP systems used in shipyards.

Detailed Planning

AVEVA Assembly Planning is unique in building the assembly data structure in parallel with the basic and detailed design activities. This integration ensures that changes in the design will automatically be visible in the production documents.
AVEVA Assembly Planning allows users to plan the installation of equipment and systems into the assemblies. This powerful tool minimises production costs by installing items at the earliest possible stages of assembly.

Model parts of all types are collected to the relevant assembly in the production breakdown structure. Assembly properties such as weight, centre of gravity, and physical size can then be calculated. Each assembly can contain production details such as work location, destination for the next stage, and orientation.

The installation sequence of parts for any assembly can be easily defined and changed to determine the most cost-effective sequence. The sequence can be played back and reviewed, step by step on the screen.

Automatically Produced Assembly Documents

Traditionally, different shipyard departments make a variety of assembly documentation:
  • Steel Working Drawings and parts lists
  • The Build Strategy document, usually containing an exploded block/assembly view of the ship
  • Installation Drawings, showing installation of systems and equipment
This can create a coordination problem. AVEVA Assembly Planning allows the automatic creation of composite assembly drawings and parts lists, in installation sequence order, for each assembly/installation job in a specific assembly location.
